Consider Making Chande Your VBS Mission Project

06.26.2009:
King's Grant Baptist Church sponsored the Chande Orphanage as their Vacation Bible School mission project and collected $434.66 from the kidaroos on the Boomerang Express. The money was sent to Inglewood Baptist Church in Grand Prairie TX, who is able to easily get the money to the field.

07.20.2008
South Norfolk Baptist Church collected over $800 for the Chande children during their Vacation Bible School in 2008. Each day of the event, the mission time emphasized the orphanage and how the church can help make a difference in the lives of so many children in Zambia.

Sponsoring a Teacher at the Chande School

11.10.2008:
The teachers at Chande are committed to the mission and ministry of the Orphanage Project.  They work diligently to prepare the students for the challenges of academic life while instilling in them a love for God and nurturing their creativity through music, drama, and the arts.  The teachers frequently work for considerably less than their fellow educators serving in government schools.  By sponsoring a teacher for $60 per month, Chande’s financial burden will be lessened allow for learning materials to be purchased as well as hiring additional instructors. Graham Road Elementary School Partnership

11.10.2008:
Graham Road Elementary School (a public school in Falls Church , VA ) is a Focus School for Language and Fine Arts and is a 2008 Blue Ribbon School Award recipient.  The partnership between these two schools also involves McLean Baptist Church and includes sharing of music and thoughts, teacher enrichment and exchange of ideas as two GRES teachers have traveled to Chande a number of times and other things are part of this partnership.  There will be a team of educators returning to Zambia in the summer of 2009 to further this partnership and we hope there will be  Chande teacher in residence at Graham Road Elementary School sometime in 2009.  www.fcsp.edu/GrahamRoadES

Churchill Road Elementary School Partnership

11.10.2008:
Grade fives at Chande and fifth graders at Churchill Road (public school) have been pen pals since 2007.  There was a really nice article in the local paper (over 1 MB in size).  [ click here for the article ]

Brick Making Machine Virginia Update

09.09.2008
As you all know, I have a great love for Zambia and for the ministry of the Chande Orphanage. The facilities are not yet complete, but faithful Zambians along with others from the US and other parts of the world have been diligently working on the buildings.  It takes many days to produce bricks from clay, to baking – the entire process is quite time consuming.  Chande has an opportunity to purchase a brick making machine that would produce bricks in record time.

The Hydraform brick making machine, which the orphanage hopes to purchase, is manufactured by the Hydraform Group, founded in 1988 and now operating out of offices in Johannesburg, South Africa , Uganda, Nigeria, and India. Hydraform provides equipment training and support worldwide. The machine is easy to operate, and the bricks are produced economically with local soil and 5–10 percent cement, are not burned, and are interlocking and dry stacked, minimizing the need for mortar. This stacking method also enables untrained volunteers to do the work that, using conventional bricks, would have required trained masons. As you can imagine this machine is quite pricey, but will become a revenue making machine when the facilities are complete as bricks will continue to be made and sold to the community.

Read more about the brick making machine here.

The school continues to grow and the teachers are being greatly encouraged by partnerships with friends here in the States. The children’s faces are full of joy as they go to school day after day.  Also, there are many children who are loved and incorporated into families while the buildings are being worked on.

If you would like to contribute to this machine, please make checks payable to:

Place "Chande Brick Machine" in the note.

It has been amazing the different folks who have chosen to contribute to these endeavors.  I am thankful to so many for your support and prayers for Chande!

Have a wonderful day! Trish

Orphanage Building Update

06.01.2008
Ed & Linda Miller report... At the Orphanage there is continued work on completion of the building. They are putting plaster on the outside of the building and have over 1/2 of it covered. It is a smooth coat of plaster sort of like stucko. Also they have finished all the plastering of the walls in the rooms inside. We are getting showers working and hope to get the bath tubs installed in the houseparents apartments this next two weeks. The students are back in school again having started again the first week of May.

Chande Connections and Partnerships

05.01.2008
Here are a few cool additional stories about Chande connections and partnerships. Lindsay, Brian and Barb are heading up these projects:
  • We have a woman-to-woman sewing project going on between the women of Chande and the McLean Baptist Church women.
  • Chande was recognized at the Fairfax County Schools Partners in Education on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 for having a partnership with Graham Road Elementary School in Falls Church, VA and McLean Baptist Church. This summer, a group of educators from Graham Road and MBC will be traveling to Chande to do further teacher enrichment/exchange and set up the necessary technology to continue internet interaction.
  • Churchill Road Elementary School in McLean, VA 5th graders and grade fives at Chande have been pen pals.
  • Lindsay is a professional photographer who took incredible pictures and turned them into cards – the donation for the cards goes directly to Chande. (We'll keep you posted on availability).

Inglewood Baptist Mission Trip Report

04.13.2008
What a thrill it was for the 2008 Inglewood Mission Team to spend time with the children who attend Chande Training Center. Our itinerary included, five mornings to share at Holiday Bible School, leading a ladies' and men's retreat, witnessing in the bush and showing the Jesus film. There were 225 professions of faith and many lives were touched. [ Photos ]

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the gifts and notes you sent and your continued support of these precious children.

Various Groups Headed for Kitwe, Zambia

Inglewood Baptist is a regular traveller to Zambia, at least once each year!. Pray for their efforts, for the children, for the staff, and also for those left behind here in the States, and that all may experience the grace and love of Jesus Christ.

Brian Maxwell and a group of educators (many associated with Graham Road Elementary school - a partner with Chande) went to Chande in late June/early July 2008. It's really wonderful that a young woman connected with the Wyoming gang has been in contact with Brian about joining the group.

From January 8-30, 2008, a team of 18 from College Heights Baptist is Casper WY traveled to Kitwe for the third time in three years. In addition to ministering to the Chande community, five men from Casper accompanied five men from Kitwe into the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The rest of the team laid some groundwork for the brick-making project (see below).

Brick-Making Machine Wyoming Update

Mike sent word last week that there is still a great need for funds for the brick making machine as not even half of the $26,000 has been raised, yet. I know I had a number of folks, outside of my local congregation, respond when I contacted them about the machine. As Mike said, "we trust God will do it!" (well, that might be a paraphrase, but you get the point.) If each of us found just a few folks to donate $100 or more, we could do this rather quickly. The cause is so great and there are many people (churched and non-churched) who love to help a good cause.

Children Still Need Sponsors

Jan from Inglewood still has some children who need sponsors. We have a number of the pictures and bios at our church, let me know and I think Jan has said we can forward them on. Here's another neat story... we have an English language program at MBC. BaChanda has visited with a number of the students (some who know English quite well and are part of the advanced classes as much for fun and fellowship as anything); well, 2 of our internationals have adopted Chande children and they are so in love and thrilled by this opportunity!

Even Teachers Can Be Sponsored

We have been waiting for teacher bios before we begin to really push for teacher sponsors, but we have a few already sponsored for the year. We'll be sure to keep you posted.
