Sponsoring a Teacher at the Chande School

11.10.2008:
The teachers at Chande are committed to the mission and ministry of the Orphanage Project.  They work diligently to prepare the students for the challenges of academic life while instilling in them a love for God and nurturing their creativity through music, drama, and the arts.  The teachers frequently work for considerably less than their fellow educators serving in government schools.  By sponsoring a teacher for $60 per month, Chande’s financial burden will be lessened allow for learning materials to be purchased as well as hiring additional instructors. Graham Road Elementary School Partnership

11.10.2008:
Graham Road Elementary School (a public school in Falls Church , VA ) is a Focus School for Language and Fine Arts and is a 2008 Blue Ribbon School Award recipient.  The partnership between these two schools also involves McLean Baptist Church and includes sharing of music and thoughts, teacher enrichment and exchange of ideas as two GRES teachers have traveled to Chande a number of times and other things are part of this partnership.  There will be a team of educators returning to Zambia in the summer of 2009 to further this partnership and we hope there will be  Chande teacher in residence at Graham Road Elementary School sometime in 2009.  www.fcsp.edu/GrahamRoadES

Brick Making Machine Virginia Update

09.09.2008
As you all know, I have a great love for Zambia and for the ministry of the Chande Orphanage. The facilities are not yet complete, but faithful Zambians along with others from the US and other parts of the world have been diligently working on the buildings.  It takes many days to produce bricks from clay, to baking – the entire process is quite time consuming.  Chande has an opportunity to purchase a brick making machine that would produce bricks in record time.

Latest word is that the machine is at the Zambian border awaiting customs clearance.

The Hydraform brick making machine, which the orphanage hopes to purchase, is manufactured by the Hydraform Group, founded in 1988 and now operating out of offices in Johannesburg, South Africa , Uganda, Nigeria, and India. Hydraform provides equipment training and support worldwide. The machine is easy to operate, and the bricks are produced economically with local soil and 5–10 percent cement, are not burned, and are interlocking and dry stacked, minimizing the need for mortar. This stacking method also enables untrained volunteers to do the work that, using conventional bricks, would have required trained masons. As you can imagine this machine is quite pricey, but will become a revenue making machine when the facilities are complete as bricks will continue to be made and sold to the community.
